How it Works

StudyStack is built around one idea: repeat what you don't know until you do. No algorithms, no scheduling — just you and the cards.

The Study Loop

Load a deck

Drag and drop a .md file onto the home screen. Your deck is parsed instantly and saved to your browser — no account needed.

See the keyword, test yourself

Each card shows a keyword. Before hitting Reveal, try to recall the answer. This active retrieval is the core of the method — the struggle to remember is what makes it stick.

Sort into two piles

After revealing, be honest. If you knew it cold — Got It. If you hesitated, blanked, or guessed — Memory Hole. No partial credit.

Work the hole

When the deck runs out, your Memory Hole cards get reshuffled and you run them again. Each pass, the pile shrinks.

Clear the deck

Once every card is in the Got It pile, the session is over. You'll see how many rounds it took, your total time, and a motivational stat.

StudyStack is operated by OinkDrop LLC ("we", "us"). We keep data collection to the minimum needed to run the app. This policy explains what we store and why. We do not sell your data, we do not show ads, and we use no third-party analytics or tracking.

What we collect

Account details: your email address and a securely hashed password. If you use Google sign-in, the basic profile Google returns (name, email, avatar).
Your content: the decks and cards you create or import, so they sync to your account.
Your study history: when you study, we record each card verdict (got it, shaky, missed), which deck it belonged to, and when. This is what powers your stats, streaks, and Study Insights. It is stored on our server and linked to your account so it follows you across devices.
Usage counters: we keep daily totals for the service as a whole: how many people used it, how many accounts were created, how many decks were created or edited, how many share links were opened, and how many AI generations ran. To count how many different people used the app on a given day, we store a scrambled daily code derived from your account. The code cannot be turned back into your account, and it changes completely every day, so these records cannot identify you or track you across days. They are deleted after 120 days.
AI features: if you use an AI feature, the content involved (the cards being drilled, or the topic you typed) is sent to Anthropic, our AI provider, to generate the result. Anthropic does not use this data to train its models. We record how many tokens each generation consumed against your monthly allowance. Nothing is sent to Anthropic unless you trigger an AI feature yourself.
Email delivery: account emails such as verification and password resets are delivered through Brevo, our email provider.
Launch interest: if you have an account and ask to be notified about Pro, we record which plan you were interested in; we will email you once when it launches, and that record is deleted with your account. If you leave your email without an account, we store it to send you the launch notice and occasional StudyStack news, every email includes an unsubscribe, and you can ask us to remove your email at any time.
Server logs: our server keeps standard web request logs, including IP addresses, for about five days for security and troubleshooting. They are then deleted automatically.
Content reports: if you report a shared deck, we record the report details and your IP address to prevent abuse of the reporting system.
On your device: some preferences and cached data are stored in your browser's localStorage.

What we do not do

We use no third-party analytics, no advertising networks, and no cross-site tracking. We do not sell or share your data. We do not build advertising or behavioural profiles. We do not read your decks for any purpose other than operating and supporting the service.

How we use it

To provide the service: signing you in, saving and syncing your decks, and deck sharing when you turn it on. Your study history powers your own stats and insights. The usage counters tell us whether the app is working and growing; we look at them in aggregate, never to follow an individual around.

How we protect it

All traffic to StudyStack is encrypted in transit. Passwords are stored hashed, never in plain text. Backups are encrypted. Access to the server is limited to the operator. No system can be guaranteed 100% secure, but we keep the amount of data worth stealing deliberately small.

Payments

If you subscribe, payment is handled by Stripe. Card details go directly to Stripe. We never see or store your card number. We keep a customer reference and your plan status so we know what you have access to. See Stripe's privacy policy.

Sharing

A deck is private until you turn on a public link. When you do, anyone with that link can view and copy that deck. You can turn the link off at any time.

Legal requests

We may disclose information if required by law or a valid legal request. If that ever happens, we will tell you unless the law forbids it.

If StudyStack changes hands

If StudyStack is ever acquired or transferred, your data stays under this policy, and we will notify you before any transfer takes effect so you can delete your account first if you wish.

Age

StudyStack is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If we learn that an account belongs to a child under 13, we will delete the account and its data. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, email us and we will remove it.

Data storage & retention

Data is stored on our own self-hosted server. We keep your account data until you delete your account or ask us to remove it. Daily usage codes are deleted after 120 days. Server request logs are deleted after about five days.

Your choices

You can delete individual decks at any time. You can delete your account, which immediately removes your decks, your study history, and your AI usage records. Residual copies in server logs and encrypted backups expire automatically within 14 days. You can email us to request deletion or correction, or ask what we hold.

Changes

If we change what we collect, we will update this policy and change the date at the top before the change takes effect.

Your account

You're responsible for all activity under your account and for keeping your login secure. You must be at least 13 years old to create an account, and old enough to form a binding agreement in your jurisdiction.

Pro subscriptions and payments

StudyStack Pro is an optional paid tier, billed monthly or yearly through Stripe. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. You can cancel anytime in the app; cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you already paid for, and you keep Pro access until then. We do not give partial refunds for unused time. The Founding Supporter purchase is a one-time payment, refundable within 14 days if you change your mind. If we raise prices, existing subscribers keep their current price until they cancel, and we will announce changes before they take effect.

Acceptable use

StudyStack is a study tool. You are solely responsible for the decks, cards, and other content you create, import, or share, and you must have the right to use it.

No personal or private information

Do not put personal, private, or identifying information into decks or shared content, whether about yourself or anyone else. This includes names tied to private details, contact information, government or financial identifiers, account credentials, health information, and similar data.

No illegal or illicit content

Do not create, upload, or share any content that is illegal, or that depicts, promotes, or facilitates illegal or illicit activity. This includes (without limitation) content that sexualizes minors, incites violence, or infringes others' rights.

User-generated content & sharing

Shared decks are created by users. OinkDrop LLC does not pre-screen, create, endorse, verify, or guarantee shared content. Opening or copying a shared deck is at your own discretion and risk.

Your content and ours

Your decks are yours. By using StudyStack you give us permission to store, display, and transmit your content as needed to run the service, and nothing more. When you make a deck public, you give other users permission to view and copy it for their own studying. Copies that others made while your deck was public are theirs to keep; turning off a share link stops new access but does not reach into other people's accounts. The StudyStack name, design, and software belong to OinkDrop LLC.

Reporting and enforcement

Shared content can be reported from its share page. We may review, remove, disable, revoke, or restrict any content or account at any time, at our discretion, with or without notice.

Content found or reported to involve illegal activity, or personal information posted in violation of these terms, may be reported to the relevant authorities together with associated account and access information.

Ending your account

You can delete your account at any time, which removes your data as described in the Privacy Policy. We can suspend or close accounts that violate these terms. The sections on liability, disclaimers, and content permissions survive account closure.

Platform disclaimer

OinkDrop LLC acts as a hosting platform, not a publisher of user content. The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or that content is accurate.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, OinkDrop LLC and its operators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for any content created or shared by users, arising from your use of the service. In any case, our total liability to you is limited to the greater of $100 or the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Service changes

StudyStack evolves and features may change. If we ever shut the service down, we will give you notice and time to export your decks first.

Feedback

If you send us ideas or suggestions, we can use them without owing you anything.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, USA. Disputes will be handled in Wyoming courts, though you can always use your local small claims court.

Changes

We may update these terms. We will update the date at the top and give notice of material changes before they take effect. If you keep using StudyStack after that, the new terms apply.

Miscellaneous

If part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a term right away, we have not given it up. Nothing in these terms limits rights that the law where you live guarantees you.
