How it Works

StudyStack is built around one idea: repeat what you don't know until you do. No algorithms, no scheduling — just you and the cards.

The Study Loop

Load a deck

Drag and drop a .md file onto the home screen. Your deck is parsed instantly and saved to your browser — no account needed.

See the keyword, test yourself

Each card shows a keyword. Before hitting Reveal, try to recall the answer. This active retrieval is the core of the method — the struggle to remember is what makes it stick.

Sort into two piles

After revealing, be honest. If you knew it cold — Got It. If you hesitated, blanked, or guessed — Memory Hole. No partial credit.

Work the hole

When the deck runs out, your Memory Hole cards get reshuffled and you run them again. Each pass, the pile shrinks.

Clear the deck

Once every card is in the Got It pile, the session is over. You'll see how many rounds it took, your total time, and a motivational stat.

Key Terms

🧠 Memory Hole

Cards you couldn't recall. These loop back into the next round.

✓ Got It

Cards you knew cold. Once here they're done for this session.

≈ Shaky

Recalled, but not cleanly. Clears the card but flags it to come up first next session.

🔄 Round

One pass through current cards. Round 1 = full deck. Round 2+ = hole cards only.

🏆 Clear

The goal. Memory Hole reaches zero.

StudyStack ("we", "us") keeps data collection to the minimum needed to run the app. This policy explains what we store and why.

What we collect

Account details: your email address and a securely hashed password (or, if you use Google sign-in, the basic profile Google returns — name, email, avatar).
Your content: the decks and cards you create or import, so they sync to your account.
Local app data: study stats, streaks, and preferences are stored in your browser (localStorage) on your device.

How we use it

To provide the service: authentication, saving your decks, and deck sharing when you enable it.
We do not sell your data or use it for advertising.

Sharing

A deck is private until you turn on a public link. When you do, anyone with that link can view and copy that deck. You can turn the link off at any time.

Data storage & retention

Data is stored on our self-hosted server. We keep your account data until you delete your account or ask us to remove it.

Your choices

You can delete individual decks at any time, or contact us to delete your account and associated data.

Your account

You're responsible for activity under your account and for keeping your login secure.

Your content & shared decks

You keep ownership of the decks and cards you create. By creating or sharing content you grant us a limited license to store and display it for the purpose of running the service.
You are solely responsible for the content you create, import, or share. You must have the right to use it.
You agree not to create or share content that is illegal, infringing, hateful, harassing, malicious, or otherwise harmful.
Shared decks are user-generated. StudyStack does not create, endorse, verify, or guarantee the accuracy of decks shared by users. Opening or copying a shared deck is at your own discretion.

Moderation

We may remove content or suspend accounts that violate these terms or that we reasonably believe to be harmful, at any time and without notice. To report content, email us (below).

Disclaimer

The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that content is accurate.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, StudyStack and its operator are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for any content created or shared by users, arising from your use of the service.

Changes

We may update these terms; continued use after changes means you accept them.
